Snakes and Strawberries: PHAB Meets Biology

Writes Blake B. (L6th)

Last Friday, the Lower Sixth Phab Team organised and participated in a long-awaited, fun-filled Phab Club with the Biology Department.

Phab Club (which runs fortnightly with the Phab team), gives the guests who join us for Phab Week an opportunity to come into school on a Friday evening spend time with our volunteers, including some Lower Sixth girls from RMS, alongside promising the chance to participate in entertaining activities. Last week, this event was centred around the well-known extraction of the DNA from strawberries, alongside some animal handling, paper-plane making and, of course, some much needed orange juice and biscuit breaks.

Both boys and guests experienced heaps of amusement with some memorable events including one of the guests exploding a bag full of crushed strawberries all over the lab, a very popular visit from the school snake, Apollo, and one of our Lower Sixth volunteers, Agastya D., attempting to explain the experiment to some puzzled A-level biologists.

The Whole Phab Team would like to extend a huge thank you to Mrs Stuteley for orchestrating such an exceptional and enjoyable event.
