Careers

At Merchant Taylors’, we’re passionate about helping every pupil discover their path and feel confident about the future. Our Careers Department is here to guide and support boys from their very first year through to life after school - whether that’s university, an apprenticeship, or stepping into the world of work.

The Careers Department at Merchant Taylors’

The role of the department is to help all pupils build a solid foundation for their future careers. By helping them to understand their aptitudes and abilities, skills and interests we aim to support the transition from school to university, apprenticeships and into the working world.

Part of the whole school’s commitment to encouraging breadth of opportunity and motivation to follow their passions, we aim to translate pupils’ time at Taylors’ into education and career decisions that will be rewarded with fulfilment and success.

The Careers Team

Our dedicated three-person team is based right at the heart of the school in a purpose-built space next to Reception. Led by Sue Grice, our full-time Head of Department, the team includes Minoo Thobhani, our Enterprise and Work Experience Coordinator who runs the Young Enterprise programme in the Lower 6th and supports pupils across the school find work experience and Sarah Allen our Careers Coordinator who manages our programme of careers education events.

We’re proud to be working towards the national Quality in Careers Standard (QiCS), a mark of excellence in careers education, through the Investor in Careers award.

We aim to help every pupil understand their strengths, interests, and ambitions—so they can make informed, fulfilling choices about their future. We do this in a wide variety of ways including:

  • Careers education starts in Year 7 and continues through to Year 13
  • Strong connections with alumni (OMTs) who return to share advice and experiences
  • One-to-one careers meetings available to all pupils on request
  • Careers activities woven into both academic and co-curricular life
  • Integrated with the pastoral system for personalised guidance
  • Close collaboration with the Sixth Form to align university and career goals
  • Dedicated work experience coordinator to help pupils find placements in a wide range of industries
  • Year 11 pupils meet with Careers staff to review Morrisby profile results and plan A level and career pathways
  • Access to a wide network of alumni and employers for insights and mentoring
  • Participation in enterprise activities throughout school, culminating in the national Young Enterprise programme in Year 12

Each year group follows a tailored Careers Programme, which we update regularly based on pupil feedback to keep it fresh and relevant.
