OMTs Shine in Oxford Blues Victory Over Eastern Suburbs

Writes Scott de Weymarn, Head of Sports Scholarships

Oxford University Blues hosted Eastern Suburbs in a fiercely contested encounter that drew a crowd of over 1,000 spectators, creating a vibrant and electric atmosphere at Iffley Road. The match marked a significant occasion, not only for the quality of rugby on display but also for the involvement of several Old Merchant Taylors (OMTs).

Harry Bridgewater, current Oxford Blues Club President and OMT, started at fullback, delivering a composed and commanding performance. Harry’s leadership both on and off the pitch continues to impress, and he is currently overseeing the planning of the Blues’ first tour to Australia in 30 years—a landmark event for the club.

Adding to the OMT presence, it was fantastic to see Antony Poole and James Beeby supporting from the touchline. Both are actively trialling for the university squad and, according to Blues General Manager Ian Kench, are making excellent progress. As their former teacher and rugby coach, it was a real pleasure to catch up with them after the match and hear how well they’re doing.

The match itself was a physical and passionate affair, with Eastern Suburbs keen to make their mark on UK soil. Oxford responded with grit and flair, ultimately securing a well-earned 26–12 victory. I had the honour of refereeing the game, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience—especially with so many familiar faces involved and the high standard of rugby on display.

This fixture not only showcased elite university rugby but also highlighted the strong and growing influence of Merchant Taylors’ alumni within top-level sport. With OMTs leading, playing, and progressing at Oxford, it’s a proud moment for the school and a sign of exciting things to come.
