The Historical Fiction Writing Competition!

Writes Louisa Lewis, Teacher of Humanities

Boys in the Third Form have been busy completing their entries for the Historical Fiction writing competition – a collaboration between the History and English department – based on their study of Anglo-Saxon England. The best entries demonstrated a balance between historical accuracy with creative storytelling to transport readers to another time and included a meticulously crafted setting with vivid details, believable characters who act according to their time, a plot that intertwines with real events, and a writing style that avoids modern anachronisms. The best stories created an immersive and authentic experience – both true to history and compelling as a story.

Huge congratulations to all our authors shortlisted for consideration, but the winner goes to Navan W. for his wonderful tale of how Soren the Monk was able to safeguard the Lindisfarne Gospels from the brutal Viking assault on the monastery in 793AD. The Lindisfarne Gospels are a richly illuminated Latin manuscript of the four Gospels, created around 700 AD in Northumberland, England. Believed to be the work of a single monk named Eadfrith, this masterpiece of Anglo-Saxon art features intricate, vibrant designs and is held at the British Library. We are very grateful to Soren (and to Navan) for rescuing it!
