Sixth Form 26/09/25

Alex Hibbert and Tales of Exploration

This week, the Lower Sixth were lucky enough to attend a captivating lecture by Alex Hibbert, a renowned professional Arctic explorer.

Writes Thomas H. (L6th)

In his talk, Alex Hibbert gave an engaging insight on the struggles and challenges that he faced during his record-breaking 2008 world record expedition for the longest unsupported journey in any polar region. This record involved Alex Hibbert travelling 1,374 miles on foot over 113 days on the Greenland ice sheet.

Alex also shared his remarkable experiences, including life in the isolated village of ‘Qaanaaq’ where temperatures regularly plummet below -30°C. He shared his challenges of buying and training his sled dogs to eventually be able to travel out onto the ice with them. During an expedition over an ice sheet, a member of his team had fallen through the ice along with 10 sledge dogs but had thankfully made it out.I was really impressed by his achievements and perseverance under extreme hardships, which offered a valuable perspective that will allow us to approach our own challenges with similar determination.

The Lower Sixth extend a sincere thank you to Alex Hibbert for this amazing opportunity.
