Cricket

Merchant Taylors’ has one of the most active and successful school cricket programmes in the country, providing opportunities for boys to play, compete, and develop a lifelong love of the game.

A Thriving Cricket Culture

Cricket is one of the great strengths of sport at Merchant Taylors’ School. The game thrives here – with more than 350 pupils participating across 19 squads and 17 teams regularly fielded on Saturdays.

Cricket is an experience afforded to everyone at Taylors’ where we celebrate the success of the batsman who scores a 100 in the D team as equally as his counterpart in the 1st team.

World-Class Facilities

Our cricket facilities are unmatched. The School boasts twelve high-quality grass squares – the most of any school in England – plus 10 artificial nets and 16 grass nets.

In 2024, we opened a world-class indoor cricket centre, which features five nets, four surfaces, a fielding area, and Merlyn bowling machines, enabling year-round training.

Many of these facilities are housed within the Julian Hill Cricket Centre, a purpose-built, multi-functional cricket training hub. Combined with our extensive outdoor provision, we offer an exceptional cricket environment whatever the weather, supporting players at every stage of their development.

Developing World-Class Athletes

Merchant Taylors’ has a proud tradition of nurturing talented cricketers. We proudly count 50 County Cricketers among our pupils and maintain strong links with County Clubs. The School is home to Middlesex Youth Cricket and serves as the training base for Middlesex CCC 1st XI.

Our grounds regularly host First-Class and T20 fixtures, with recent matches against Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, and Northamptonshire. Pupils also benefit from masterclasses with professional players and coaches, especially during the winter training season.

Our cricketing reputation has attracted international teams, including India (2018), Sri Lanka, England, and Australia during the 2019 World Cup – further testament to the strength of our programme and facilities.

Our cricket programme extends far beyond Sandy Lodge. Pupils enjoy regular overseas tours, giving them the opportunity to play and train in some of the world’s most inspiring cricketing environments. Recent tours have included South Africa, Grenada, Barbados, and Sri Lanka, with 40 Year 10 pupils training in Dubai and Abu Dhabi during our annual Easter junior tour.

From Sandy Lodge to South Africa: Aaryans Cricket Journey

Aaryan Sawant’s cricketing journey at Merchant Taylors’ School has been one of leadership, talent and rapid progression.

As 1st XI captain, he guided his team to the semi-finals of the National Schools T20 competition, showcasing both skill and commitment on the field.

His performances earned him a place in England’s Young Lions squad, where he trained alongside the country’s most promising young cricketers. In less than six months, Aaryan progressed from school captain to England U19 representative — an achievement that highlights both his dedication and the strength of the School’s cricket programme.

Aaryan’s success continues to inspire current pupils and serves as a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work, talent, and opportunity.
