Hockey

Merchant Taylors’ runs one of the most dynamic and inclusive school hockey programmes in the country, offering every boy the chance to play, compete, and develop both skill and a lifelong passion for the sport.

“Our hockey programme is built on the belief that every boy can achieve his potential – from those picking up a stick for the first time to players competing at county, national, and international level.”

A Sport for All

Hockey is a major sport for all at Merchant Taylors’. With over 20 teams, the passion for the game runs deep from the 1st XI through to the U12C. All pupils receive regular hockey training from an experienced team of coaches and the opportunity to represent the School in matches. Many boys arrive never having picked up a stick, learning the game here from the ground up.

From First Stick to Performance Pathway

Our programme combines opportunity with ambition. Every player represents the School in fixtures and benefits from expert coaching from both staff and external specialists. For those with higher aspirations, our performance pathway supports progression to representative, National League, and elite university hockey.

We offer year-round provision, including indoor training to sharpen technical skills, summer leagues, and competitive fixtures. Our touring schedule includes opportunities to compete internationally and experience different hockey cultures.

Developing Skills and Leadership

At junior level, the focus is on core skill development and teamwork, while advanced players receive tailored support to play at county, regional, or national level. Pupils can also gain England Hockey qualifications in umpiring and coaching, and help lead events such as the Strikers Cup and Tuesday Hockey League, which grow the sport in local schools and the wider community.

Outstanding Facilities and Support

Our facilities are among the best in the country, with three floodlit all-weather hockey pitches and excellent spectator areas. The recently opened Julian Hill Indoor Cricket Centre overlooks the main hockey pitch, providing additional viewing space, modern changing rooms, and a video analysis suite that enhance both training and match-day experiences. Strong links with OMT Hockey Club provide further opportunities, with over 80 pupils also representing the club.
