House Assembly on the Importance of Sleep

School and sleep don’t necessarily go together! That said, we want our students to regard their own sleeping habits as just as necessary for their health as eating properly and getting enough physical activity.

Mr Pacey and Ms Solomons, Joint Leaders of Wellbeing in the school, are progressively visiting House Assemblies over the coming weeks to deliver the message of the importance of a good sleep! They’ve been telling the boys about just how vital sleep is to both our physical and mental wellbeing, before challenging students to consider their own sleeping habits. Some readers may be interested to know that teenagers require more sleep than adults, typically between 8 to 10 hours a night.

Students learnt about the best conditions for sleep as well as the importance of establish a bedtime routine. We also took an inter-cultural perspective on the topic: for example, night owls/late risers are often considered to be lazy in Western culture, when they’re simply obeying their own body clocks by working later and sleeping later.

With mock examinations coming up in both the Middle and Senior Schools after the Christmas holidays, we really hope that students will look upon their sleep habits with renewed interest and work towards getting more quality sleep in order to support their learning.
