Lower Sixth Inspired by Magician and Author Ian Keable

Writes Charlie B. (L6th)

An hour with Ian Keable offered the Lower Sixth a memorable experience, combining insight, inspiration and plenty of laughter. Keable spoke candidly about his unconventional journey, describing how he left a life of academia at Oxford and a secure career in finance as a chartered accountant at PwC to pursue his passion for performing magic full-time.

Central to his talk was a message that resonated strongly with both students and staff: the importance of listening to what your heart tells you and having the courage to follow it. Through his interactive tricks and slick slight-of-hand, Keable encouraged the Lower Sixth to think carefully about what they truly want from life, rather than simply choosing the safest or most expected path.

His delivery was made even more memorable by his characteristically dry humour, which had the audience laughing throughout – particularly a certain Philosophy student who became the frequent (and good-natured) target of several quick remarks. Alongside the advice came moments of genuine astonishment, including an extraordinary newspaper prediction trick that left the room visibly stunned.

The hour concluded with a final trick involving a repeatedly broken and rejoined piece of string, accompanied by a thoughtful reflection on life’s twists, setbacks and full circles. It was a privilege to welcome an author, prior member of the Big Four, and accomplished comedian-magician, whose visit left the Lower Sixth both entertained and inspired. We look forward to his return in the future.
