On Wednesday 1 July, Ayngaran M., Marc P., Zach R., and Rian V. (4ths), travelled to Repton School in Derbyshire to compete in the School Sport Magazine National Finals for the U14 Boys’ Cup.
Accompanied by Mr Omoyeni and I, the team stayed overnight prior to the competition and conducted themselves impeccably throughout the trip. This was particularly commendable as they were missing their final day of school and the opportunity to say goodbye to friends and teachers before the summer break. Impressively, the boys remained focused and excited for the challenge ahead.
The draw placed us against the host school, Repton, in the Semi-Final. Having watched Repton play at Eton College the previous weekend, the boys knew they would be facing some exceptionally strong opposition and were understandably cautious about their chances. However, they rose magnificently to the occasion.
Displaying outstanding skill, determination and composure in both the doubles and singles matches, our team produced an excellent performance to defeat Repton School 5-1 and secure a place in the National Final!
The Final took place later that afternoon against a very strong Brentwood School side. Our boys competed with great determination and played some excellent tennis, but Brentwood proved formidable opponents and ultimately claimed a 4-2 victory.
Regardless of the result, this achievement deserves enormous recognition. I would like to congratulate the team for three reasons. First, this was our school’s first ever entry into the competition, making qualification for the National Finals a remarkable accomplishment in itself. Second, the boys finished as runners-up with approximately 140 schools entering the competition nationwide. Third, and perhaps most importantly, they demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship, camaraderie and mutual support throughout the event, encouraging one another before, during and after every match.
Their commitment to improvement has continued beyond the school year. I understand that several members of the team continued training throughout the summer holidays, with Rian V. achieving the impressive feat of winning a tournament in Los Angeles! Such dedication, enthusiasm and perseverance are a testament to the strength of tennis at our school.
Congratulations once again to Ayngaran M., Marc P., Zach R. and Rian V. on an outstanding achievement. Thank you for your hard work, commitment and willingness to contribute so positively to the continued success of school tennis. Your efforts have set an excellent example for younger players and have given the school much to celebrate.
