Senior Geography Society Debate

This was a special week in Senior Geography Society as we welcomed St Helen’s to our annual debate. This year the question to debate was “In the context of global governance, should developed nations play an equal role in the management of rainforests”.

Writes Abdullah M (U6th)

In mixed teams of Merchant Taylors’ boys and St Helen’s girls, 8 countries each put forward their views around the question at stake. The debate was dominated by the nations of USA, China and the UK, which each argued that we should co operate and help lower income nations to mitigate the impacts of deforestation by using bilateral agreements and funding to help lower income countries to be more sustainable. However, despite the influence of these nations, Norway came as a surprise package, as representatives from Norway expressed their concerns around the handling of rainforests, and as a result of this, came out as eventual winner due to their current policies in place and ideas of how they want to move forward. We are grateful for the research done by all and the debate was full of facts and heated conversations at times, which created a really amazing environment. We also thank St Helen’s for collaborating to create and participate in this event and wish to continue this in the future.
