Our pupils do amazing things every single day, but behind those achievements are all the hardworking staff here at Merchant Taylors’ School.
In Staff Spotlight, we look to explore the diverse backgrounds and skills of the people who make Merchant Taylors’ a great place to be. This week we hear from Jonathan Coleman, Teacher of Music.

When did you join Merchant Taylors’?
I joined Merchant Taylors’ this year, in September 2026.
Tell us about your role. What excites you about it? How did you get into it?
As a Teacher of Music my main role is teaching classroom music to Lower and Middle School classes. I really enjoy the enthusiasm and energy of the Third and Upper Third Form classes, giving students the opportunity to sing, play instruments and engage with music technology. This is a great contrast to the more academic rigour and advanced musicianship of the Fourth Form and Divisions classes as they work towards taking their GCSEs. I also lead the Sinfonia String Orchestra, accompany student performers on the piano and support the choirs and instrumental groups on offer at Merchant Taylors’.
What are you most proud of outside of work?
I’m proud of my wonderful son, who is also a Merchant Taylors’ student! I was also pleased to have run the London Marathon last year raising £3,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

What did you study at University?
I completed a BA in Music at The University of Nottingham followed by a PGCE in Music Teaching at Goldsmiths, University of London. I have since achieved a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) in Piano Performance from ABRSM.
What is one thing you think everyone should try?
I think everyone should try singing and playing music! I’ve seen as a teacher that everyone has the potential to learn music at any age, it gives joy and a sense of achievement.
