Staff Spotlight: Will Carey Marketing Communications Officer

Our pupils do amazing things every single day, but behind those achievements are all of the hardworking staff here at Merchant Taylors’ School. In Staff Spotlights we look to explore the diverse backgrounds and skills of the people who make Merchant Taylors’ a great place to be. This week we hear from Will Carey, Marketing Communications Officer.

When did you join Merchant Taylors’?

I recently joined at the beginning of August, so whilst being a new member of staff for September, I have had a little bit of time to get around the school before the hustle and bustle of school life began!

Tell us about your role. What excites you about it? How did you get into it?

I loved studying Business at school, so naturally this led to me studying Business and Marketing at University. Unfortunately, I left during Covid, in a difficult job market. From this, I moved back home and began working at my old school as both a rowing coach and a teaching assistant. This ignited my love for learning and education, something which followed me into my next job in Marketing for a contract catering company, working across hundreds of other independent schools. Having then been made redundant, I knew that I wanted to stay within education, which led me to find a job advertisement for Merchant Taylors’. Having only ever heard great things about the School, I jumped at the opportunity, to great success! I love working with people and at a school like Merchant Taylors’, there are so many amazing stories to share, so keep an eye out on our School website (shameless promotion).

What are you most proud of outside of your work at school?

My last job didn’t leave much in the way of spare time, so something I am very happy to be getting back in to is simply a sense of routine and exercise, having lost that part of me for so long. (I’m also unbeaten in a pub quiz three months in a row).

What did you study at A-Level?

Business, Psychology, DET and Philosophy and Ethics. This doesn’t sound like a normal combination and when you compare it to my original choices of Business, Maths, Chemistry and Computing it makes them sound very random. However, I knew that I loved the A-Levels that I landed on, and as everyone always says, choose the subjects you love and find interesting, something that ended up being the best piece of advice to take forwards.

What piece of media would you recommend and why?

I am a big fan of music, concerts and TV, so my recommendation has somehow combined all three. Having stumbled across a small video from a Hans Zimmer concert and instantly craving the whole concert, I ended up purchasing the entire recording of Hans Zimmer: Live in Prague. Which I watched twice… in one evening. If you were to ask my favourite part of this, it would be the Pirates Of The Caribbean Medley, for obvious reasons.
