Merchant Taylors’ U13E 2 – 1 Sir William Borlase
On a bitterly cold and but exciting afternoon, the Merchant Taylors’ U13E hockey team put in a determined performance to secure a hard-fought 2–1 victory against Sir William Borlase.
The boys hit the ground running right from the opening whistle. Just five minutes into the first half, Oscar K. (U3rds) showed brilliant individual skill, dribbling past a defender before calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net to give Taylors’ an early 1–0 lead.
Borlase responded swiftly, pushing forward to test the Taylors’ defence. Our goalkeeper made a fantastic initial save to deny a powerful strike, but the opposition managed to recycle the rebound and place it into the corner to draw level at 1–1.

With the first half drawing to a close, Taylors’ launched a sensational counter-attack from deep. Ronan K. (U3rds) launched a long pass clear up the right flank, setting the pitch alight and putting Taylors’ on the attack. Oscar K. (U3rds) picked up the pass and sent a wild cross over the D, but Taylors’ showed brilliant awareness to chase down the stray ball, keep it in play, and whip a second cross right back into the danger zone. Standing in prime position, Micah J. (U3rds) got the final touch, tapping the ball into the back of the net in dramatic fashion right as the half time whistle blew.
The second half was a tense affair, played in freezing conditions. Taylors’ thought they had extended their lead early on when Ayaan M. (U3rds) drove down the left wing yet again and crossed to Ronan K. (U3rds) who dribbled it into the back of the net, but the goal was unfortunately disallowed for an earlier foot fault. Both sides generated chances through short corners, but strong defensive running kept the score line tight.
Despite missed short corners in both halves, Taylors’ maintained disciplined structure and held out to secure the 2–1 win. After a tough, physical contest in miserable weather, both teams demonstrated great sportsmanship with handshakes at the final whistle.
