Library

The Library at Taylors’ plays an important role in supporting academic success and instilling a life-long love of reading in all our pupils.

The Library provides a calm, bright and welcoming space where pupils can study or relax.

Our enthusiastic team of qualified librarians carefully curate both print and online resources for pupils to explore. They are actively engaged in developing our pupils as readers and effective researchers, as well as providing an exciting programme of guest speakers including authors, illustrators, poets and storytellers.

"The correlation between pupils who are active readers and those who achieve highly in English at all levels, including public examination, is well known. Our greatest wish, however, is that every pupil at Merchant Taylors’ School discovers and nurtures a love of reading, in whatever form that may take."

A Lifelong Love for Reading

We encourage Taylors’ pupils to be curious, to explore their passions and to always learn more. A huge part of this is to instill a life-long love of reading – for enjoyment and well-being, and social and academic development – through fiction and non-fiction in a range of different formats. Pupils help choose resources for their library and we welcome feedback through book reviews on our online catalogue as well as conversations with the library staff.

Our summer reading challenge is one way we encourage pupils to read before even starting at Taylors’ and to develop their love of the written word into adulthood. It allows us to get to know pupils individually as readers, help them build on their personal interests, and expand their literary experiences.

A book club for our younger pupils offers fun book-based activities, and we shadow national book prizes, such as the Carnegie Medal for Writing, to foster critical appreciation of texts.
