Examination FAQs
What if I am late for an exam?
If you are unavoidably delayed and feel that you may not arrive on time, please contact the School Office on 01923 820644 as soon as possible. At the discretion of the Head of Examinations you may be allowed to begin your exam after the official starting time. You are advised to allow plenty of extra travelling time for each journey.
What should I do if I feel unwell on or before the day of my exam?
If you are ill on the day of the exam
Tell a member of the exams team before the exam – this can either be done via email or before registration. It is vital we know as soon as possible so we can make appropriate arrangements if need be. A doctor’s certificate will be required, which must be obtained/dated that day, confirming the diagnosis and how your illness has affected you. We will send a request for special consideration and the Awarding Body will decide how to judge your performance.
If you are ill during an exam
Tell the invigilator immediately. If you feel your performance was negatively impacted, a doctor’s certificate will be required, which must be obtained/dated that day, confirming the diagnosis and how your illness has affected you. We will send a request for special consideration and the Awarding Body will decide how to judge your performance.
Absence through illness
Please telephone the School Office on 01923 820644 as soon as possible and let them know your situation. You cannot take your exam on another day. You will need a doctor’s certificate, which should be obtained the same day and not in retrospect. The doctor will need to specify on the certificate that you were too unwell to sit the examination. A form will then be completed by the school and sent to the Awarding Body asking for special consideration to be made. A grade may be awarded by taking into account the results of any other papers taken. If you miss more than one paper, a grade is not usually awarded even if you have a doctor’s certificate. You must have completed a minimum percentage of the overall assessment (varies per awarding body) in order to be awarded a qualification.
What is an access arrangement?
An access arrangement allows exam candidates with special educational needs, disabilities or temporary injuries to access an assessment without changing the demands of the assessment and are the way that exam boards comply with the duty of the Equality Act 2010 to make ‘reasonable adjustments’. Access arrangements aim to remove the disadvantages a pupil may have when accessing assessment due to difficulties resulting from physical, cognitive/learning, sensory or psychological differences. Access arrangements are designed to level the playing field and must not create any unfair advantage or compromise the integrity of the assessment. Access arrangements must be agreed upon before an assessment and must reflect the pupil’s normal way of working in the school.
Please refer all access arrangement queries to the Head of Learning Support klb@mtsn.org.uk.
What is special consideration?
Special consideration is where we provide the awarding body with details of any temporarily experienced illness, injury, or some other event outside of their control at the time of the assessment and they decide if a small percentage is added to the relevant component mark. It is applied when the issue or event has had, or is likely to have had, a material effect on a candidate’s ability to take an assessment or demonstrate their normal attainment level in that assessment.
Please refer all special consideration queries to the Examinations department exams@mtsn.org.uk.
