Writes Jack Middleton, Director of Hockey
Friday 12 December saw the annual Strikers’ Junior Hockey Awards Evening take place, to celebrate the successes of the Hockey programme during the Autumn term.
It was an opportunity to celebrate the highlights of the term and some individuals who were rewarded for their Sporting Charter Values.
The Hockey term started with a Third Form House Hockey tournament, running for the first half of term. Every student trained in their House during Games and played for one of three teams (Lions, Tigers or Panthers) on Saturdays in a bid to be crowned Junior House Hockey Champions. Meanwhile the Upper Third Form were training tirelessly, knowing some tough fixtures were ahead against KGS, Reeds and sides in Belgium! It was great to host several Merchant Taylors’ Prep boys in the same year, training together once a week as part of the preparations for the tour to Belgium.
Half term arrived and 45 students departed for Belgium in what was a fantastic touring experience, playing some outstanding Hockey, enjoying the culture of Bruges and developing some excellent friendships. Memories that will stay with the boys for a lifetime.
As we returned for the second half of the Autumn Term, the schedule was busy. Weekend blocks vs KGS and Reeds were the key match ups; however, we also had great matches against Hitchin, Dr Challenors and Sir William Borlase. In all, every student in Upper Third Form represented the school across four fixtures and 94 students in Third Form represented the school from teams A-H.
With so much to celebrate, the Strikers’ Hockey Junior Awards evening was a popular event and great to see so many families coming together to celebrate the success of the boys. It had a real community feel.
The awards were given based on the Sporting Charter, focussing on boys playing sport in the right way and representing the school in the right way. Winners were:
Selfless – Arman M. (U3rd)
Proud – Angad M. (U3rd)
Ownership – Rohan B. (3rd)
Respect – Krish D. (U3rd)
