Evensong at St Albans Cathedral

Writes Samuel Hill, Music Administrator

On Friday 6th February, the Chamber Choir travelled to St Albans Cathedral to sing a service of Choral Evensong. The service opened with the Responses by Smith of Durham, before we sang a portion of Psalm 22 to a chant by Samuel Wesley. The office hymn was ‘Take my life, and let it be’, which was followed by the canticles: Gibbons’ Short Service.

The anthem was Byrd’s setting of Ave Verum. The choir was conducted by the Assistant Director of Music, Mr Ian Crawford, and the organist was Dominic D. (U6) who concluded the service with an outstanding performance of Buxtehude’s Prelude, Fugue and Chaconne in C. The service was led by the Precentor. The readings were taken from the prophecy of Hosea, and from St Paul’s first epistle to the Corinthians.

Our sincere thanks to the Cathedral staff for making us feel so welcome; we thoroughly enjoyed singing in such an amazing space and look forward to returning in the near future. The Chamber Choir is now working towards its performance in the Joint Schools’ Choral Concert, which takes place on Monday 23rd March.
