Exploring Venezuela with Panglossia

Writes Dhylan H. (L6th)

On Thursday, Leo F. (L6th) delivered an engaging presentation at Panglossia Club entitled “Venezuela en crisis: golpes, sanciones y la captura de Maduro” guiding listeners through the political and economic turmoil in Venezuela in Spanish, whilst also relating the subject to current affairs in the Spanish-speaking world.

Leo’s talk explained how Venezuela’s oil dependent economy shaped its modern history, covering a breadth of topics such as the rise of Chavismo under Hugo Chávez; nationalisation and social schemes such as Mercal; a subsidised food programme; and the state oil company PDVSA. Leo followed on by discussing economic collapse and severe hyperinflation under Nicolás Maduro. He also outlined the impact of international pressures, sanctions and geopolitical involvement, leading to Maduro’s dramatic capture in early 2026, a moment marking a turning point in this country’s crisis.

The talk skilfully connected the Venezuelan history, economics and politics, helping us understand complex global issues within the Spanish speaking world beyond the classroom.
