What is a Coach?

Lower Sixth MSLs took part in an intensive coaching workshop this week, exploring how to ask effective questions, listen with intention, and help others find their own solutions. Guided by Mr Pacey, the session encouraged pupils to reflect on their communication habits and practise genuine, supportive dialogue - skills they will now bring into their tutor groups and mentoring roles over the months ahead.

As part of the MSL programme our Team underwent two hours of condensed training with Mr Pacey, Affiliated School Coach. Part of this programme digs deep into understanding what a Coach is, how it works and when to use this skill. The MSLs tried coaching each other to use effective questioning, an important part of Coaching. Pupils were challenged to become more self-aware of themselves in a conversation and reflected on how to effectively listen in a conversation. Our MSLs will be able to practise this over the coming months. This  may lead to Coaching conversations within their tutor group, alongside mentoring our  Divisions.

All MSLs were awarded a certificate after each passing this course.

Some opinions from MSLs:

Josh A. “I found it to be an incredibly insightful experience, where I learnt a lot about how people can find the answer to their own problems via carefully placed questions.”

Ayush P. “I feel that I am able to empower others to solve their problems through coaching.”

Lucian H. “We cover up many of our thoughts nowadays and learning to help others feel comfortable opening up is a really useful skill for helping friends and family.”
