OMT Cup Match Report: Taylors’ vs OMT

The annual OMT Cup provided yet another thrilling encounter as the current Merchant Taylors’ School (MTS) pupils faced off against the Old Merchant Taylors’ (OMT) team in a game that had everything—goals, drama, and a nail-biting penalty shootout.

OMT came out of the blocks quickly, asserting their dominance with two early goals that put MTS under immediate pressure. However, just before halftime, Iago P found the back of the net to shift the momentum back in MTS’s favour, giving them a vital foothold in the game as they headed into the break.

That momentum carried into the second half as Jack Groves struck early to level the score, injecting belief into the MTS side. With the energy now in their favour, it seemed as though they might go on to take control. However, OMT showed their experience and resilience, regaining their two-goal cushion with just 15 minutes left to play.

Refusing to give in, MTS launched another spirited comeback. Nikhil W fired home a stunning reverse stick strike that rattled in off the post, bringing the deficit back to one. With time ticking down, MTS won a crucial penalty corner, and after a well-worked routine, Noah P was in the right place to tap into an open goal, completing the dramatic comeback and sending the match to penalties.

The shootout proved to be just as tense as the game itself. Luis R stepped up heroically, producing a string of excellent saves to keep MTS in contention. With the decisive flick resting on his shoulders, Jack G calmly slotted home to seal a hard-fought victory for MTS, sparking jubilant celebrations among the pupils.

It was a match full of twists and turns. The OMT Cup once again delivered an unforgettable contest, showcasing the talent and determination of both sides. MTS will take great pride in their comeback and the resilience shown, while OMT will surely be eager to reclaim the trophy in next year’s edition.
