Merchant Taylors' School Appoints New Bursar

The School is delighted to announce the appointment of James Poynton as its new Bursar.  James will join the school in February 2026.

Merchant Taylors’ School is delighted to announce the appointment of James Poynton as its new Bursar.  James will join the school in February 2026. He will take on the responsibility from Ian Williams, who has provided exceptional service to the School over the past 13 years.

James is currently the Chief Operating Officer of the Roger Williams Institute of Liver Studies, an academic medical research institute. This followed an 18-year career in the Royal Air Force, which involved operational and strategic leadership roles in the UK, the US and the Middle East. He worked across numerous Government departments, specialising in international relations and commercial and financial management. Experienced in leading multifaceted professional service functions, he was Head of People and Operations for the UK’s highest readiness fast-jet unit.

The Governors are delighted to appoint James and look forward to working with him as Merchant Taylors’ enters a new era – one that will see the School continue to flourish and develop as a community for pupils aged 3 to 18, supported by an exciting programme of investment for the future.

James read History at the University of Sheffield as well as studying International Relations and Politics at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge. James is a keen sportsman with a passion for athletics, winter sports and motor racing. He has two boys aged 11 and 14.

Commenting on his appointment, James Poynton said, ‘Throughout my career I have been fortunate to lead teams committed to excellence and service. I see those same qualities reflected in the spirit of Merchant Taylors’. I am thrilled to join the School and to help ensure its continued strength and success.”

Simon Everson, Head Master, added, “We are delighted to welcome James to Merchant Taylors’. His impressive record of leadership and strategic management, both in the RAF and in the medical research sector, will be of great value to the School. I look forward to working closely with him as we continue to strengthen our foundations and deliver the very best education for our pupils. I know my successor, Sam Baldock, is equally pleased with the appointment.”
