Last week, the House Art Competition pitted the boys against each other across two afterschool events. The remarkable creativity and skill of sixteen pupils across eight houses was on full display as they tackled two difficult artistic challenges: still life drawing and clay sculpture.
The first challenge – a thirty minute still life competition – presented pupils with a highly intricate arrangement of natural forms and objects, skulls, musical instruments and household objects. The boys worked with charcoal and rubber, striving to capture the most dynamic composition through bold contrast and expressive mark-making.
The second challenge was a relief sculpture; pupils had just 30 minutes to construct a complicated tropical fish using terracotta clay in low relief. This challenge tested their ability to refine form and levels, develop intricate mark-making using clay tools, and bring their artistic vision to life in three-dimensional form.
Throughout both tasks, the pupils demonstrated impressive dedication, focus and creative interpretation, even whilst subjected to Mr. Gosden’s 70s playlist.
This year’s House Art Competition highlighted the depth of artistic talent within the school, and we look forward to seeing even more brave boys stepping up to the challenge in future years!
In the senior event, Andrewes secured first place, while Walter emerged victorious in the junior event.
