Boys Bid Farewell to Head Master in Final Assembly

Merchant Taylors’ gathered for its final assembly of the Summer Term yesterday, an occasion made all the more significant as it marked the retirement of the Head Master, Mr Everson, after thirteen years leading the school.

In a speech delivered on behalf of the boys, the Head Monitor reflected on the Head Master’s distinctive style – one perhaps best remembered for his assemblies, which had a habit of starting in unexpected places. From the “wood wide web” to skeuomorphs, Mr Everson’s talks were rarely predictable, but consistently ended up revealing something larger about how to think, and how to live.

The Head Monitor singled out one word in particular as emblematic of the Head Master’s outlook: sprezzatura – the art of achieving difficult things with humility and grace. It was, he said, a fitting summary of an approach that encouraged boys “to work hard, but not loudly; to aim high, but stay grounded.”

Beyond the podium, the tribute also recognised a quieter side of Mr Everson’s tenure: the personal generosity, encouragement, and individual care he has shown pupils throughout his time at the school.

To mark the occasion, the boys presented two gifts. The first was a set of eight books, one per House, containing messages of thanks from students across the school. The second was a bound collection of Mr Everson’s assemblies — a permanent record of the ideas and ideals he has shared with generations of boys, fittingly brought together on the very day his final assembly came to a close.

Closing the tribute, the Head Monitor thanked Mr Everson for the wisdom, example, and care he has given the school over thirteen years, and wished him “every happiness in retirement,” adding that he leaves Merchant Taylors’ “with our gratitude, our respect, and our very best wishes.” Mr Everson received a standing ovation from the boys as the assembly came to a close, a fitting send-off as the school broke for the summer holidays, marking the end of an era.
