The Lower Sixth were honoured to have the pleasure of hearing Warrant Officer Johnson Beharry VC last Thursday; a man whose courage and selflessness embodies the very meaning of service. Warrant Officer Beharry’s visit coincided with the week of Remembrance, a particularly moving time of the school year. Thus, Warrant Officer Beharry’s measured address lent an added depth of reflection to the solemn and meaningful occasion.

The Lower Sixth was emotionally stirred by his recollection of remarkable valour in Iraq, where his actions under fire saved the lives of nearly 50 comrades. Furthermore, his bravery when opening up about recovery from life changing injuries was a testament to his humility. His journey, whilst undeniably tumultuous, underscored the importance of resilience as a tool to battle adversity.

His ability to continue moving helped him overcome seemingly insurmountable hardship, whether it be tanks and ambushes or psychological obstacles. Warrant Officer Johnson’s recollection was a compelling reminder that courage is not the absence of fear – for at numerous points he felt immense fear – but rather the determination to act in spite of it.

I speak for all of the Sixth Form when I say that his words have helped to motivate me approach the various challenges of Sixth Form life with resilience, courage and bravery. It is steady effort, not sudden leaps, which induces lasting change.
