A Successful Start to the Cricket Season

Writes Phil Davies, Director of Cricket

The cricket season has got off to a fast and exciting start. Games are coming in thick and fast as we approach the cup games. This week has brought multiple highlights for cricket, including the inaugural ‘Friday Catches’.

Capping Ceremony

Last Friday, over 70 boys were given their Merchant Taylors’ School cricket cap.  This is a tradition that welcomes them into part of the cricketing history at the School that stretches back over 100 years.  Ahead of our huge nineteen fixture block vs Whitgift on Saturday, the new boys sat in the lecture theatre beaming with pride and excitement as they readily joined the cricketing story of the School.

Friday Catches

At lunch time on Friday, the newest cricketers in the school were further inducted to the club by receiving their Friday Catches. This consisted of the senior cricketers hitting the new Third Form some practice catches ahead of the first full block of the year. The occasion started with 1st XI captain Rahul R. hitting U12A team captain Shiven P.  his first catch, with all his teammates and senior cricketers watching. It was a lovely moment, which will hopefully stand the test of time as the cricket programme moves on.

Early Season Honours

With only two weekends having taken place, there have already been a lot of individual performances to celebrate!

Rishi M. (Divs) scored 328 runs in 4 innings, including 101* (Repton), 96 (Hampton) and 118* (Whitgift). Arjun M. (4ths) has had an equally impressive start, scoring 215 runs in 4 innings including 113* (Hampton) and 93 (Whitgift).  1st XI Batsman, Aahil B.
