Medicine and Dentistry Society Go Bananas at Suturing Workshop

This week, the Medicine and Dentistry Society hosted one of its most hands-on and memorable sessions yet – a suturing workshop using bananas! The goal was to introduce members to basic surgical techniques in a fun and accessible way. Bananas, with their soft peel and fleshy interior, provided a surprisingly realistic surface to practice on.

Writes Arin L and Yuvraj B (L6ths):

Lead by Arin L. and Yuvraj B., we focused on learning the simple interrupted suture, one of the most common and essential techniques used in surgery. Under guidance, we practiced making clean incisions and carefully closing them using individual stitches that were tied off separately. It took a steady hand and a lot of patience, but by the end of the session, many of us felt more confident with the basics of knot-tying and using surgical instruments.

Not only was the workshop a great introduction to practical clinical skills, but it also gave us a taste of what medical and dental school might involve. It was rewarding to see everyone’s excitement and teamwork – and of course, to walk away with a banana full of stitches!
