Our pupils do amazing things every single day, but behind those achievements are all of the hardworking staff here at Merchant Taylors’ School. In Staff Spotlights we look to explore the diverse backgrounds and skills of the people who make Merchant Taylors’ a great place to be. This week we hear from Michael Husbands, Second Master, Teacher of Classics.
When did you join Merchant Taylors’?
1998
Tell us about your subject. What excites you about it? How did you get into it?
I teach Classics, that is Latin and Greek. I love how the subject brings in a huge variety of academic disciplines, from linguistics to literary appreciation, philosophy to history, archaeology to social anthropology. I also like dusty old books, and the way these great minds from over 2,000 years ago can still speak directly to us about the human experience.
What are you most proud of outside of your work at school?
I don’t think pride in oneself or one’s achievements is a good quality, so I prefer to focus on the achievements of others close to me.
What did you study at A-Level?
Latin, Greek and History.
What piece of media would you recommend and why?
The West Wing. Unfortunately whimsical fantasy these days, rather than cinema verite.
