Taylors' Boys from Across the Generations Come Together to Bid Farewell to Mr Everson

Writes Emma Bindloss, Development Manager

When Simon Everson concluded his farewell letter in the Taylorian, he wrote that Merchant Taylors’ is a great school because of the people who make up its community. That sentiment was warmly returned as hundreds of Old Merchant Taylors (OMTs), parents and friends of the School gathered to celebrate his retirement after thirteen years as Head Master.

It was a truly special occasion, bringing together generations of the Merchant Taylors’ community. OMTs who had left School in the 1960s and 1970s caught up with recent leavers from the 2020s, alongside parents, supporters and colleagues whose lives have been touched by Simon’s leadership. Whether they had been taught by him in the classroom, worked alongside him, or met him through the many School and OMT Society events he enthusiastically supported, all were there to thank him for the lasting impact he has made on the School.

The afternoon also provided an opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution of Ginny Everson. Many parents who had worked with her through Friends’ Committees were delighted to join the celebrations and thank her for the support, warmth and commitment she has shown throughout Simon’s time as Head Master.

The event took place in a marquee on the Head Master’s Cricket Pitch. Guests enjoyed the slightly cooler conditions than had prevailed over the course of the week, as they were greeted by members of the JCR and Simon himself. Throughout the evening, Kena D provided the perfect musical backdrop, entertaining guests with a wonderful mix of well-known favourites and skilfully improvised pieces on the piano.

Over drinks and canapés, guests heard three heartfelt speeches. The first, from Nick Latham, Director of Development, who spoke about the joy of working with Simon over 13 years, and the strengthened bonds between school, OMTs and wider community that Simon’s headship had made possible. Selvan Senthilkumaran (Head Monitor 2018) spoke of the impact that Simon had made on so many lives over his career as a teacher and Head, and of the ripple effect on the world beyond the Merchant Taylors’ community. Finally, Simon reflected on his time in teaching, and as Head Master at Merchant Taylors’ and thanked the community for its support. Guests were also invited to leave a personal message in a commemorative visitors’ book, which quickly filled with memories, thanks and good wishes.

It was a fitting celebration of Simon and Ginny’s years of dedicated service to Merchant Taylors’. We thank them both for everything they have given to the School community and wish them every happiness and success in the years ahead.
