The Music Department in conjunction with Merchant Taylors’ Prep recently organised a stunning Spring Spectacular concert.
Particular highlights were the first public performance of a new composition by Upper Sixth Former Thomas Boyle, whose Fanfare for Brass and Percussion was performed by Taylors’ Brass and members of the Senior Percussion Ensemble. The first half closed with the Merchant Taylors’ Prep School Choir giving a spirited performance of Rock-a My Soul.
The concert was drawn to a close with the strings players, firstly with Sinfonia playing an arrangement of Haydn’s ‘St Anthony Chorale’ Sinfonia was followed by the Chamber Orchestra, with Thomas Boyle once again taking a prominent role as one of two soloists in Copland’s hauntingly beautiful ‘Quiet City’. With his counterpart soloist, Toby King-Cline, playing the cor anglais with consummate skill, the two Upper Sixth Form musicians, with the Chamber Orchestra in tow, held the audience spellbound with the quality of their performance. The Concert ended in truly spectacular style with the Symphony Orchestra giving a superb performance of Ravel’s Bolero!
