Junior Chemistry Club is Hotting Up!

Things took an explosive turn in Chemistry Club this week, see how Khaleeq, Pranav and the rest of the chemists handled the heat!

Khaleeq (3rds):

On Thursday in Chemistry Club, ten pupils from the Thirds and Upper Thirds set Mrs Knight’s hand on fire. At first, I thought it would be dangerous and burn the teacher, but it was perfectly safe and actually very fun! Mrs Knight began by scooping up methane in washing up liquid in her hand, before someone took a splint and lit it on a Bunsen burner. We then slowly went up with the lit splint and lit all the methane bubbles and her hand on fire!

After this she threw the bubbles in the air and with precise timing, we lit the splint and the methane burst into flames. The heat was incredible. If not for the safety goggles, our eyes would be fried!  We each had a go carefully lighting and burning the methane and are excited for the next experience. Overall, it was a very fun experience and I hope we can do it again. As always safety comes first!

Pranav (U3rds):

I was excited to attend Chemistry Club. I hoped to do fun experiments, and we did exactly that! We were doing a chemical reaction on combustion (burning). There was water in a big container and Mrs Knight added detergent to it.

Mrs Knight then released methane into the container, after which, she took a handful of bubbles to be lit on fire by the students.

It was a lot of fun, and it was very amusing to watch the flames reach the top of the ceiling. It was probably my best, and remain my best, Chemistry Club session ever!
