Arkwright Engineering Scholarships 2024
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship for those wishing to pursue a career in engineering. We are thrilled to announce that after a tough selection process, thirteen students (including myself) have achieved this, the highest ever number of slots won by Merchant Taylors’ boys.

Nine of these students have secured a full scholarship, which includes sponsorship from a company for both the pupil and the school.
Starting in October of last year, diligently led by Ms Park, myself and other students in the Fifth Form began the application process for the prestigious scholarship. This began with a written application, followed by a test on our ability to create design ideas based on problems, and finally, a virtual interview with engineers who aligned to our interests in the field.
While this was challenging, it was an incredibly rewarding process which has reaped incredibly generous rewards. Each winning student has been assigned a committed sponsor company (of whom the Royal Air Force, DePuy Synthes, the Carol Emmott Foundation, and the Merchant Taylors’ Company are but a few) with a one-to-one mentor offering invaluable advice, work experience and industry connections. The award also offers a yearly financial benefit to pursue our own projects throughout the duration of our A-levels.
The process was challenging on many levels, and as such, I’m sure the other pupils who achieved the scholarship are as proud of their achievement as I am. I do not doubt that they will all utilise the scholarship to succeed in their respective future careers.
What is an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship?
An Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is the most esteemed scholarship of its type in the UK, designed to inspire students to pursue their dreams and change the world as an outstanding engineer of the future.
The Scholarships are awarded to hard-working 16 year old students through a rigorous selection process.
Scholarships are sponsored by a commercial company, trade association, university, professional institution, armed service, government organisation, worshipful company, charitable trust or personal donor. This means that support is offered in various different ways, for example, valuable hands-on work experience, support for your curriculum project and a personal mentor who can help you with aspects of your studies and career planning.
Below are the names of the pupils and their sponsors, including some information about the companies sponsoring them.
