Staff Spotlight: William Tang, Head of Head of Design, Engineering and Technology

Our pupils do amazing things every single day, but behind those achievements are all of the hardworking staff here at Merchant Taylors' School. In Staff Spotlights we look to explore the diverse backgrounds and skills of the people who make Merchant Taylors' a great place to be. This week we hear from William Tang, Head of Design, Engineering and Technology.

When did you join Merchant Taylors'?

September 2023

Tell us about your subject. What excites you about it? How did you get into it?

Design, Engineering and Technology (D, E & T) is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject which prepares all young people to live and work in the designed and made world. In the words of James Dyson, “Design and technology should be the subject where mathematical brainboxes and science whizzkids turn their bright ideas into useful products.” It is about providing opportunities for students to develop their capability, combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to create quality products. I love to see the twinkle in students eyes when they are come up with their exciting ideas and then being able to support them to develop their ideas and bring them to life as a physical outcome at the end of the project. Having studied Manufacturing Engineering and Management at university and participated in a taster programme with the Education Department during my final year, it was an organic progression to go into Teaching as a career path, where I could apply my subject knowledge while inspiring budding designers and engineers into the industry.

What are you most proud of outside of your work at school?

I am most proud of my toddler son, Ethan, who is growing up to be a smart, kind, and sweet boy. In terms of personal achievements, I was really pleased with my performances in goal for my Sunday League team, London Orient FC, who were crowned Division 5 2023-24 champion and earning promotion.

What did you study at A-Level?

I studied A-Level Maths, Physics and Design & Technology: Communication, and AS-Level General Paper and French.

What piece of media would you recommend and why?

I would recommend @interestingengineering on Instagram and X for our budding designers and engineers to follow as they produce amazing content about latest breakthroughs from the engineering industry. Of course, I should also mention @mts_det Instagram and X which is the official account to keep up to date with developments in the department.
