Germanists Visit The European Career Roadshow

Students of German in both the Fifth and Lower Sixth Forms took part in the European Career Roadshow on 27th September at the Goethe-Institut in South Kensington. The Goethe-Institut promotes German language and culture abroad, hence one of the reasons our Germanists ought to be more familiar with its mission!

The roadshow was spread out across two floors and our students enjoyed chatting to representatives of BDO, Lufthansa Group, the European Parliament, UCL and Cambridge, among other exhibitors. The sound-proof interpreter's booth proved a hit, with boys interpreting a passage on pet passports in the EU. After the roadshow, our Germanists took part in a panel discussion on the relevance of multilingualism in the job market (around the corner at the Austrian Cultural Forum) and a language workshop 'Nachhaltigkeit im Unternehmen' (Sustainability in Industry), which was held at Imperial.

Finally, students were able to meet representatives from German exchange organisations DAAD and the UK-German Connection, which co-ordinate time in Germany for students and teachers, often partly or even fully subsidised. The way to drastically improve your skills in any language is to spend time abroad and we sincerely hope that the day at the Goethe-Institut provided lots of food for thought to our students of German. Thanks to all involved.
