Staff Spotlight: Timothy Birtles, Teacher of RS & Philosophy
Our pupils do amazing things every single day, but behind those achievements are all of the hardworking staff here at Merchant Taylors' School. In Staff Spotlights we look to explore the diverse backgrounds and skills of the people who make Merchant Taylors' a great place to be. This week we hear from Timothy Birtles, Teacher of RS & Philosophy.
When did you join Merchant Taylors'?
I joined Merchant Taylor's' in April 2024. Previously, I had worked for ten years at an inner London comprehensive school, where I was a Head of Department amongst other roles. In 2019, I decided to step down as Head of Department in order to study for my PhD in 19th century German Philosophy, alongside full time teaching.
I completed my PhD in February 2024 and began looking for a new challenge! I had briefly considered university teaching which I did a little of while studying, however found that the scope of teaching as a philosophy lecturer was too narrow (the best way to get sick of something you love is to pursue a PhD in it). In the fantastic RP department at MTS I am able to teach an incredibly wide range of content - from Ancient Greek philosophy in the morning, to animist religions by the afternoon! My students stretch me intellectually every day and I'm very grateful to be able to teach them.
Tell us about your subject. What excites you about it? How did you get into it?
Alongside my young family, Philosophy is my life. I can't imagine not spending my time discussing deep questions with young people. I truly love it and feel genuinely blessed to be paid to do it - life is far too short to spend it not asking profound and meaningful questions. If my mother is to be believed, I first started thinking philosophically when I was 3 years old. Apparently on a trip to the Alps, I spent a long car journey asking my parents to prove to me that God exists! What a nightmare!
What are you most proud of outside of your work at school?
Other than my PhD, it would have to be my wife and two small sons. Being a dad is such a joy and I highly recommend it!
What did you study at A-Level?
I studied Philosophy, English Literature and Politics, as well as an AS level in Critical Thinking and History.
What piece of media would you recommend and why?
Any of my students will be able to tell you that I am a big fan of the 'Crash Course Philosophy' YouTube channel as well as Alain de Botton's 'School of Life' YouTube series.
