Hispanic Theatre Festival
Back in June, when I presented Upper Sixth student Ben W with the challenge of selecting a Spanish language play, choosing a scene, and recreating this to perform at the XII Hispanic Drama Festival at North London Collegiate school in October, he took this on and began reading a number of plays in Spanish to find the right one. The chosen play was 'El Método Grönholm' by the Catalan playwright Jordi Galceran.

On Wednesday 9th October, Ben, along with his actors Yoshi T-C, Gabriel W, Sebastian W and Giorgio M, attended the festival at NLCS and performed their scene of the play in Spanish alongside twelve other schools. This was the first time that Merchant Taylors' have attended and performed at this event. The standard of the competition was very high and it was a pleasure to watch the other schools perform as well. The boys performed very well and got a lot of laughs from the crowd (at the right times). Prizes were awarded after the festival by judges from a variety of roles in the Spanish speaking world. Most notably, Yoshi TC won Best Actor of the whole festival for his fluent and confident performance, and Ben W got a shoutout for being one of few pupil directors.
Well done to all involved, we are already looking forward to next year!
