La Sagrada Familia: A cultural deep dive in Panglossia

On Thursday 21st November, Riccardo spoke about La Sagrada Familia building in Barcelona. Riccardo’s presentation covered several key aspects of the Cathedral’s history, architecture, and cultural significance

He began with a brief history of the project, noting that construction began in 1882 under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar but was largely shaped by Antoni Gaudí after 1883. Riccardo emphasized Gaudí’s innovative approach, combining Gothic elements with curved lines and organic forms to create a distinctive architectural style.

He also discussed the future plans for the Cathedral, highlighting that it is expected to be completed in 2026, more than a century after its construction began. In terms of technological and engineering innovations, Riccardo highlighted the use of 3D models in the ongoing construction process, which has allowed for more precise execution of Gaudí’s complex designs. He also explored the cultural impact of La Sagrada Familia, particularly its religious symbolism and its strong connection to Catalonian identity, serving as both a spiritual and national symbol for the region.

Overall, Riccardo’s presentation provided a comprehensive and enlightening overview of La Sagrada Familia and was great continued practice for Sixth Formers preparing their Individual Research Projects.
