Christmas Careers Roundup!

The Christmas holidays are approaching, but there has been no time for mince pies in the MTS Careers Office!

On Monday we welcomed two speakers from Morrisby to introduce the Lower Sixth to a new module named ‘Morrisby Higher’, designed to support university research.  This new module means that pupils can do a simple update to their profile and use it to research courses linked to their individual interests and career ideas.

On Tuesday our two Lower Sixth Young Enterprise (YE) teams, Scentra and Rooted Reflections, had their first chance to present their business ideas to external judges in an area-wide ‘Pitch to the Panel’ competition. At the time of writing, we are awaiting feedback from the judging panel, but this was a great opportunity to refine their business propositions and learn how to handle unexpected questions!

Rooted Reflections are hoping to have a stall at the Cooper’s Artisan Christmas Market in Old Amersham on Sunday 15th December.

Following on from the previously reported success of our Stylux team in the PJF Tycoon competition, the new Divs team (yet to be named!) had their orientation meeting with their business mentor Georgiana on Wednesday.

Samay from Stylux joined the meeting to pass on some advice in person. He commented “the Tycoon Finals Event was an event to remember; featuring speeches from an enthusiastic motivational speaker to numerous awards handed out in this large celebration hosted by the Peter Jones Foundation. We had a fantastic time presenting our ideas to Peter Jones, other schools, and judges regarding our stylus accessory business and we were thrilled to win the Innovative Business award - an award which was judged across all age groups. We are thankful to the Careers Department and Georgiana for supporting us through our journey and would recommend this opportunity to other future entrepreneurs!”  We are looking forward to following the new team’s progress next year.

Thursday will finish with the last CityZen meeting of this term. Next term our two teams will be developing their civil and structural engineering ideas to improve the local area and creating presentations to submit for this prestigious national competition run by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

The Careers team have been busy this week preparing for our next event which is our first ever ‘Ace that Interview’ week for the Upper Sixth in January. We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response from parents and OMTs who have offered to interview the students and are busily reaching out to everyone to respond before the Christmas break. Watch out for a review of this initiative in a future issue!
