Race Cars in Raphael Assembly!

Last week Mr Palmer-Reid, a Raphael House Tutor, presented on Formula 1 alongside Mr Willson. Thank you to both teachers for taking the time to demonstrate how to share a passion with others.

Their assembly was full of inspiration and energy and the boys of Raphael House appreciated the variety of ways that ideas were communicated. For example, Mr. Willson’s neck strength was tested by using a Newton meter to apply a lateral pull and measure the force he could resist. After a quick calculation, it was determined that he could withstand a force equivalent to 12 kg. In comparison, Formula 1 drivers must be able to easily resist 45 kg. This illustrated to the students the extraordinary level of strength and conditioning required to endure the intense g-forces experienced during high-speed cornering.

Throughout the assembly, the students delved into the art of finding the perfect racing line, alongside gaining insight into the cutting-edge engineering behind the engines and the advanced aerodynamic packages teams bring to each circuit. They discovered how these innovations are meticulously designed to provide optimal downforce for high-speed cornering, while minimising drag to maintain maximum speed on the straights.

Thanks again to Mr Palmer-Reid and Mr Willson. We look forward to more assemblies in this vein.
