VEX Winter Regional Competition

On Saturday 25th January, eleven Merchant Taylor’s pupils from MTS_MAVER1CKS and MTS_R3LOAD met Mr Willson at the Design Centre at 6:15am in the morning. After a three hour coach ride (with a short stop at services) they arrived at 9am at Simon Langton Boys School in Kent for the Winter Regional Competition. Once they had unloaded the robots and practice field from the minibus, they started the qualifying matches.

Despite robot issues, MTS_MAVER1CKS were still able to qualify Fourth in their matches, so they were partnered with Third place to set them up for success. MTS_R3LOAD qualified Fifteenth for their finals match, where they performed strongly against the odds. Unfortunately their robot was damaged partway through a match, but they still managed to claim a respectable score.

After a very strong performance by the MAVER1CKS drivers, they held the lead with an impressive eighty two points with only one match left to go.

Unfortunately, they were narrowly beaten by the final two teams. However, all was not lost! Due to the high driving skills score of a hundred and twenty four points (putting them fifth overall in the UK), the MAVER1CKS qualified to compete in the VEX UK National Championship 2025, to be held 2nd to 3rd of March at The International Centre in Telford. They also won the accolade of the Design Award for having one of the best Engineering Notebooks there, a document showing your progress throughout the season.

After a strong show by both MTS_MAVER1CKS and MTS_R3LOAD, they headed back to Moor Park to improve and reflect on their performance for their next tournament this season. Thank you so much to Mr Wilson for accompanying the teams and everyone at the DET Department who was able to make this possible.
