GCSE Drama – Theatre Visit

This week, GCSE Drama students in Divisions also went to see a performance of a set text, Blood Brothers at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury

GCSE Drama – Theatre Visit

It was our first visit to the venue, and having arrived a little early, we were heartened to find time for a quick visit to Waitrose next door to buy a few essentials for any theatre visit - a couple of pints of milk, a chocolate gateau and a whole roast chicken. After consuming the items, a happy group settled down to analyse the directorial, design and performance aspects of the production. Thanks very much to Mr Tonks and Mrs Chamberlain for joining the dramatic venture to Aylesbury.

On Wednesday, we had the opportunity to see one of our GCSE set texts live: Blood Brothers. We departed to Aylesbury intrigued to find out how the director had interpreted the piece. It did not disappoint. The curtain opened to an atmospheric drumbeat and smoke.

One of the dramatic devices used by the actor of Mickey that piqued my interest was his use of physicality to convey the youthfulness of the character in Act 1 and his deterioration as time passed in Act 2. The set design and backdrops were impressive in showing context and the lighting created atmosphere, also highlighting the cyclical structure of the play. Overall, a thrilling and educational trip. Thanks to all involved.
