French Study Day at the British Film Institute

Last Thursday, a group of Sixth Form French students went to the BFI to deepen our understanding of the "New Wave" film movement. A lecture led by Muriel Huet, a specialist in French cinema, provided us with all the relevant information whilst we watched trailers from a range of films and compared the innovative techniques used by the directors.

What surprised me was how the films depicted real-life themes compared to the means by which Hollywood films portray the same things in a much more glamorous.
The second part of the day included a screening of the film "Girlhood," which demonstrated the difficulties of growing up in the suburbs. After being rejected from a general high school, Marieme, the main character, faced the challenges of being a young black woman trying to fit in with other girls like her. Being able to compare the perspective of the suburbs through the eyes of young black women with that of a group of young men in "La Haine" enriched our cultural awareness and will help to shape a crucial skill in our exams.
Many thanks to Ms. Danis for organizing this school trip and to Ms. Haye for accompanying us on this special day!
