House Classics Quiz

On Friday 28th of February, the Lecture Theatre welcomed a mammoth turn out of 64 boys to take part in the first ever House Classics Quiz. Knowing your Socrates from your Sophocles was the name of the game, as the teams of four were required to showcase their knowledge of classical mythology over the course of 60 questions.
Michael Bull (Head of Classics & Quizmaster):
The runaway winners were the Andrewes team of Oscar W, Lum E, Nick N and Zack A, with a mightily impressive 50 out of 60. The side competition for the best-named team was hotly contested, with special mention to the “Argos Employees”, “Romulus’ Reds” and the winners, “Cannae Get The Prize?” My thanks go to all the competitors for their support and enthusiasm and to the Classics department for helping to organise the event.
Rob Simmonds (Head of Andrewes House):
As the doors of the Lecture Theatre opened during the Friday Hour, we knew there was no more preparing… House Classics had officially begun. Immediately, we were paired into two separate groups consisting of four people, and (despite the chaos of the lecture theatre) managed to take our seats alongside one another.
It was a real Odyssey. In total, there were sixty questions (with a few bonus points included) broken up into various aspects of Ancient Greek and Roman mythology. We hoped not to be felled by our Achilles' heel. Under close supervision from the staff, the elected scribe from the groups would write their answers to the questions, which deemed progressively more challenging as the rounds went on.
We were careful not to anger the Furies. Thankfully, the depth of knowledge amassed by the Andrewes team shone through. Some might say we were like Athenian scholars! We left the lecture theatre confident we had given it our all - it was a real Homerun – and were pleased with our performance which managed to win the event.
Overall, it was a great experience to test our knowledge and come together as a house, proving we had (nearly) as much wisdom as Socrates. Thanks to all involved in hosting such a popular event.
