Reading Week - Cartoonist Richy K. Chandler Illustrates Storytelling via Comics

Celebrating Reading Week and World Book Day last Thursday, the Third and Upper Third Forms were treated to an inspiring visit from illustrator and comic creator, Richy K. Chandler.

Known for his engaging comic strips and vibrant illustrations, Richy captivated students with stories of his artistic journey and career development. He discussed his inspirations, ranging from everyday observations to imaginative concepts, encouraging students to explore their own unique perspectives. He instilled the satisfaction that can be found in completing something from start to finish and encouraged students to not be swayed from their passions.

Richy demonstrated some brilliant drawing techniques involving the students throughout. He showed how he builds characters, from initial sketches to adding personality. He shared practical tips and techniques, making illustration accessible and demonstrating how visual ideas can be translated onto paper.

Richy was able to expand on these ideas with a lucky group of Upper Third Form students for a workshop in the afternoon. Looking at creating their own comic strips, Richy set them to work to quickly create and develop ideas, reiterating that comic strips don’t need to capture reality. Small details and context are what drive the story being told, the reader will intuitively fill in the blanks.
