Book Boffz Celebrate World Book Day

This week, the Book Boffz participated in a World Book Day quiz that was both fun and thought provoking. They tested their knowledge of popular authors, titles, series, and interesting literary trivia, the latter serving as a reminder of the value of access to books and the importance of literature in our lives.
For example, the Book Boffz were surprised (and perhaps confused) to learn that in the UK there is a statutory requirement that prisons have a library but that the same is not true of schools! Even more concerning was that research from the National Literacy Trust last year revealed that 1 in 10 children and young people aged 5-18 do not have any books at home.
Fortunately, all pupils at Merchant Taylors’ have access to a wealth of high-quality resources via the well-stocked school library and the Book Boffz were keen to share that books were very definitely part of their home lives too. With this in mind, as the quiz came to an end, they answered questions about how they organise their ‘home libraries’ and were light-heartedly shown what this might reveal about their personalities and potential future careers.
For example, arranging books by colour may indicate a creative and artistic nature, while organising them by size order might suggest a mathematical mind and a logical approach to problem-solving, potentially making you a great engineer or architect. The unconventional choice of storing books with the spines facing backward (yes it really is a trend) could indicate a preference for mystery, pointing to potential careers as a detective, spy, or codebreaker!
As always, the Book Boffz participated in the session with great enthusiasm and good humour, while refuelling with a well-deserved selection of biscuits.
The Book Boffz meet weekly on Fridays at 3:45 PM in the Junior Library. All Thirds and Upper Thirds are welcome to come along.
