Rugby Week 2022

Sport is central to an MTS education.

Our emphasis on sport and activities reflects our underlying belief that a young man’s education is about character. At the heart of our school is the space for boys to test their courage and skill in a safe environment: to pit their wits against other youngsters of similar calibre.

A strong ethical vision underlies our approach to sport. Sport is moral and character forming. There are winners and losers. Our first Head Master, Richard Mulcaster introduced the referee into football. His purpose was moral education. We subscribe to that vision today. Our boys learn to respect the referee’s decision and that dissent, bad language and sledging are unacceptable. They learn to win with modesty and to accept defeat gracefully. They learn that it is because winning is so hard that it feels so good. They learn to be sportsmen in the old sense: gentlemen, as well as players.

There are over 200 acres of magnificent playing fields mean that there are outstanding opportunities for all sports. There are cricket nets, a heated indoor pool, two floodlit all-weather hockey pitches, lakes for sailing and windsurfing, floodlit hard tennis courts, squash and fives courts, a state-of-the-art athletics track and the central, magnificent playing field.

There are school teams in Basketball, Cricket, Fives, Golf, Hockey, Judo, Rugby, Sailing, Shooting, Soccer, Squash, Swimming, and Tennis. Badminton, Croquet, Cross-country and Mountain Biking are also on offer. In reality, very few sports are not available, and we employ additional specialist coaches whenever they are needed. These coaches work with all the boys, not simply the sports elite. There is an assault course for CCF use.
