The Classics department took eleven eager and committed Classicists for a day of erudition and companionship in Oxford during half term. MTS staff led a series of seminars in the atmospheric surroundings of Pusey House, on topics including Seneca’s Thyestes, depictions of Herakles on vase paintings, and Greek notions of history.
An introduction to vases proved a useful preparation for an afternoon at the Ashmolean, where all were surprised to see two ‘Beast’ sculptures by Lynn Chadwick OMT at the entrance. Chadwick presented one of his ‘Beast’ series to MTS, and it is now placed in front of the Music Department. The boys also enjoyed a walk around Broad Street and the Bodleian, and a visit to Worcester College.
